TIME AND
TECHNOLOGY

30 years this November, I was a 17 year old kid that caught a train to Sydney from the bush and set up home all by myself…

21 years ago I started my first graphic design studio in partnership with a friend…

18 years ago I started Divine Creative Agency when my son was born and I knew that I didn’t want to work 9-5 and put him in daycare.

Time passes in the blink of an eye. When I started my first design business there was no internet, no websites, not even email!

Time moved very slowly and the work we can generate now far exceeds what we could do when designers weren’t even using computers as a tool. I was in the first wave of designers that embraced designing on computers. We saved our work to floppy disks and printed out all of our concept designs, mounted them on board and couriered them or drove them personally to present to a client. What takes 30 seconds now used to take hours – and the client paid for every minute of it. Technology has made design and marketing so much more affordable to small business.

Some designers (like myself) moved with the times and embraced the new technology, learned web design and online marketing, while others dug their heels in and refused to admit that technology was changing how we do things. Many of them no longer work in the industry.

And now Artificial Intelligence is just around the corner, changing the way we do everything and turning most of our industries on its head. I view it as an exciting new tool, ready to help us to be better, achieve more and ultimately change our industry again. Every day I learn about a new tool, a new plugin, a new online strategy that makes us faster and more efficient and more connected to a worldwide audience. And… more affordable.

  1. With havin so much content do you ever run into any issues of plagorism or copyright infringement? My site has a lot of completely unique content I’ve either created myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my authorization. Do you know any ways to help protect against content from being stolen? I’d truly appreciate it.

    1. Thanks for your question, I think all you can do is personalise your content and make it as relevant to yourself as possible, so if anybody tries to blatantly copy it, they really can’t, or they look silly. People will always steal ideas, but they can’t steal your essence, so just keep producing content and serve your clients!
